Representative Cases on Behalf of Foreign Clients
- In 1989, two tourists from Tonga were traveling over the Oakland Bay Bridge when a major earthquake struck the San Francisco Bay Area. As a result of the earthquake a section of the upper deck of the Bay Bridge collapsed. In the confusion that ensued, the Tongan tourists were directed by State Officials to proceed on the upper deck. The collapsed section was difficult to see because of the curvature of the road surface. The tourists' vehicle drove into the collapsed section causing the death of the female front seat passenger and severe leg fractures to the driver. Baum & Blake secured television footage of the accident in order to rebut the defense that the driver was responsible for driving onto the collapsed section. The case settled for over $1 million.
- English visitors to California's wine country were seriously injured when a truck illegally overtook their vehicle on a narrow road through the vineyards. Baum & Blake established the negligence of the driver and the defective nature of the truck brakes in order to achieve a winning result.
